Former major-league shortstop Rick Burleson has been named manager of the Lancaster JetHawks for next season by the Seattle Mariners.

Burleson replaces Dave Brundage, who was promoted to manage double-A Memphis, according to a source in the Mariners’ organization.

Brundage, 32, led the JetHawks to a 71-69 record in his second season as a minor league manager.

Even though the JetHawks missed the playoffs with a talent-laden roster, Brundage was picked in one survey as the California League’s best managing prospect.

Burleson, 45, retired in 1987 after 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Angels and Baltimore Orioles.

Lancaster native Jim Slaton, a former major league pitcher, will be the JetHawks’ pitching coach next season.

Football

Errol Bowen, a running back and defensive back for Sylmar High, will miss the remainder of the football season after breaking his collarbone in practice Wednesday.

Bowen, a junior, was alternating with Donald Carpenter at tailback and was the second-leading rusher for the Spartans, who defeated Monroe, 47-20, on Friday night for their 52nd consecutive Valley Pac-8 victory.

Soccer

Breanne Levery, a standout last season at Louisville, has returned to the Royals after attending Chaminade for the first two months of the academic year.

Chaminade girls’ soccer Coach Mike Evans said he learned this week that Levery, a sophomore and a second team All-Mission League selection, had transferred back to Louisville.

“I had no idea,” Evans said. “She would have made an impact with us.”

Softball

The 14-and-under Southern California Stealth fastpitch team, which won a national title in August on the arm of Chaminade pitcher Maureen LeCocq, has moved to the next level.

Nine new players and six from the national championship team make up the 16-and-under Black team, which has started its season with six consecutive victories while outscoring opponents, 40-2.
