Two men were arrested and one remains at large after they allegedly jumped a police officer Sunday night in Ventura, authorities said.

Ventura Police Officer Chris Davis suffered minor abrasions in the attack, which occurred at 7:15 p.m. in the 6300 block of Hummingbird Street, said Ventura Police Sgt. Gerry Thurston. Officers arrested two suspects soon after the incident and were searching for the third late Sunday night.

Charged with one count each of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and battery on a police officer were Jose Zenegas Hernandez, 19, and Anthony Cuevas, 21, both of Ventura, Thurston said.

Officers responded to a report of a gang disturbance on Peacock Avenue near Hummingbird Street at 7:05 p.m. Ten minutes later, Davis was hit with a beer bottle, Thurston said. The officer then was grabbed from behind by a second suspect, and a third suspect ran up and punched Davis in the head, according to Thurston.

As Davis struggled with Hernandez and the unidentified suspect, Cuevas ran off, Thurston said. Several officers responded to assist Davis, and Cuevas and Hernandez were arrested not far from where the officer was attacked, Thurston said. The third suspect fled.
