“Wrestling With the Sublime: Contemporary German Art in Southern California”--in the Main Art Gallery at Cal State Fullerton, through Dec. 12--offers a rare opportunity in Orange County, to see work by notable German-born artists now living in Europe or the United States. Curated by graduate students Linda Centell and Ewa Kirsch, the exhibition includes seminal contemporary artist Joseph Beuys and such key painters of the 1980s as Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter. Innovative photographers Thomas Ruff and Uta Barth also are included in this tribute drawn entirely from regional collections.

Marshall Crenshaw knows what it’s like to walk in his heroes’ shoes. Before starting his rock career, the New Yorker impersonated John Lennon in a touring company of “Beatlemania” and later played Buddy Holly in the film “La Bamba.” Crenshaw’s eight-album recording career has also honored his illustrious sources. His debut album, 1982’s “Marshall Crenshaw,” is the recognized classic, but the new “Miracle of Science” finds him in top form, turning romantic trials into catchy pop-rock tunes. Opening for him at the Galaxy on Sunday is Victor DeLorenzo, the original drummer of Violent Femmes, embarking on a solo career.

Donald Margulies’ “Collected Stories,” the tale of a relationship between a renowned writer and a worshipful student, is being given its world premiere on the Second Stage at South Coast Repertory. The play is engrossing, and the production is memorable. Kandis Chappell’s moving performance is itself worth the price of admission, and Suzanne Cryer is no slouch either. SCR’s staging probably can’t be beat, but the Manhattan Theatre Club will give it a try when it offers the New York premiere, possibly as early as next season.

Family Affair

Heigh ho, heigh ho, it’s off to the concert we go! The Shanghai Quartet will play the song (from Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”) in the style of Mozart, along with contemporary Chinese chamber music and more classical fare by Haydn and Ravel, on Saturday at the Orange County Performing Arts Center as part of the Young Person’s Chamber Music Concerts series in Founders Hall.
