New Name Elevates Cornerback’s Game

Kusanti Abdul-Salaam is a suddenly vocal Bruin cornerback who used to be mild-mannered Andy Colbert.

The name change came Friday, and Abdul-Salaam sounded off in the locker room on Saturday before the Washington State game. Told by Coach Bob Toledo to back up his words with actions, Abdul-Salaam did, with an interception.

On Wednesday, in a five-minute, players-only meeting at Spaulding Field, Abdul-Salaam told teammates they needed to get mad at Arizona, the Bruins’ next opponent. “He let us know that Arizona is the same way we are,” split end Jim McElroy said. “They need to win their last two games to go to a bowl game too.”
