Santa Ana’s Season Ends With 82-19 Loss to Tustin

Santa Ana gave its fans their money’s worth. Tustin got the victory. Nobody was seriously injured, and everyone left happy.

The Tillers’ 82-19 victory over Santa Ana in the Golden West League finale at Santa Ana Stadium Friday night provided a little excitement for everybody.

The Saints doused Coach Mark Miller with Gatorade to celebrate their highest scoring total of the season, and several Tustin players were able to pad their statistics, including fullback Greg Carnal, who carried the ball six times for 220 yards and four touchdowns.

Deshaun Foster added 107 yards in 13 carries, including three touchdowns, but ended up six points shy of catching Laguna Hills’ Michael Jones for the scoring lead.

Santa Ana (0-10, 0-5), which was coming off a 76-0 loss to Servite last week, saw its offense put together an impressive first-quarter drive to cut the Tillers’ lead to 14-6, and it got a big lift when Joseph Gardea returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown late in the first half.

Tustin (9-1, 4-1), which has only 28 players on the roster, stayed with its Wing-T formation throughout the game. Quarterback Todd Scott threw the ball only eight times, completing five for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Santa Ana, meanwhile, kept throwing despite 14 consecutive incomplete passes by quarterback Hector Candelas.
