Share

Early morning mischief in a Santa Paula park went terribly awry Sunday, leaving one man dead and sending another to jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

Shortly after midnight, 24-year-old Brian Dickenson and his passenger, Craig Riggs, 26, both of Santa Paula, drove onto Obregon Park, in the 500 block of Richard Road, intending to skid around on the wet grass in a pickup truck, police alleged.

While attempting a skid, according to police, Dickenson flipped the truck onto its passenger side, partially ejecting Riggs and pinning him under the vehicle.

Several witnesses attempted to give first aid to Riggs. Police arrived about 12:30 a.m., and Riggs was taken to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later from his injuries.

Following a preliminary investigation, Dickenson was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and driving under the influence of alcohol. He is being held at the Ventura County Jail, with bail set at $20,000.
