In anticipation of the release of new Pacific Bell phone books, company and city officials have set up special drop-off sites for east San Fernando Valley residents and business owners wishing to recycle outdated books.

Beginning today and ending Dec. 30, old phone books will be accepted at the following offices of Los Angeles City Council members:

* Marvin Braude, 17547 Ventura Blvd., Suite 202, Encino

* Richard Alarcon, 13630 Van Nuys Blvd., Suite 104, Pacoima; 8128 Sunland Blvd., Sun Valley, and 13517 Hubbard St., Sylmar

* Mike Feuer, 14310 Ventura Blvd., Suite 100, Sherman Oaks

* Joel Wachs, Van Nuys Municipal Building, 14410 Sylvan St.

Some Vons supermarkets and city libraries also are participating in the recycling effort. Businesses with 100 or more books should contact waste haulers and recycling companies.

Recycled paper from the phone books will be used for making new directories and envelopes provided with Pacific Bell bills, said Susan Lucero, Southern California recycling manager for Pacific Bell Directory.

“Our phone books are 100% recyclable because they’re made with non-UV-coated covers, water-based inks and water-soluble glues,” she said.
