CHP Identifies 4 of 6 Killed in I-15 Auto Crash
California Highway Patrol authorities Saturday identified four of the six victims of a fatal auto accident as a group of youths from Orange County who were racing another car filled with friends when the crash occurred.
The four identified victims, all Garden Grove residents who ranged in age from 16 to 23, had the same last name, but coroner’s officials could not confirm whether or not they were related.
The cars apparently were racing as the youths were returning home from Las Vegas the day after Thanksgiving.
The other car’s occupants, ranging in age from 16 to 20, lived in Garden Grove, Midway City and Fountain Valley.
The crash occurred about 2:40 p.m. Friday four miles north of Baker as two Acuras were speeding side by side in excess of 100 mph, witnesses told police.
As the cars were traveling southbound on Interstate 15, a Chevrolet pickup cut off the red Acura, which swerved through the median into the northbound lanes and struck a Lincoln Continental head-on, killing all the occupants of both cars. In the Lincoln were a 32-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman from Bonsall in northern San Diego County.
Three of the four victims in the red Acura were identified as Cang Van Nguyen, 23; Tuan Nguyen, 19; and Nhan Nguyen, 16, all of Garden Grove. The full name of the fourth victim, age 22, was not available.
The four occupants of the black Acura were questioned and released. The driver of the pickup is being sought for questioning.
