Ravens’ Quarterback Being Investigated

Baltimore reserve rookie quarterback Jon Stark has been suspended indefinitely with pay while the team and the NFL conduct an investigation into his possible violation of league rules regarding gambling.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue met with Stark on Nov. 25 and informed him the next day that the Ravens had been directed to place him on administrative leave.

The league was not specific about what the investigation entails, spokesman Greg Aiello saying only, “At this time, there is not a indication he bet on NFL games.” Raven spokesman Kevin Byrne said that the club learned of a possible rules violation from an anonymous phone call.

Stark, his attorney and his agent declined comment.

The New York Jets (1-12) will start Glenn Foley at quarterback for Sunday’s game at New England, the third starter the struggling team will use this year.

First-stringer Neil O’Donnell suffered a pulled right calf during Sunday’s pregame drills, spoiling his return after a separated shoulder that has kept him out the last six weeks.

Veteran Frank Reich started in O’Donnell’s absence.

Denver tackle Gary Zimmerman underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery Monday and will sit out at least one game, and quarterback John Elway, still nursing a slight hamstring pull that happened five weeks ago, might join him on the sideline this week against the Green Bay Packers.

Stan Humphries went home from the hospital after an overnight stay because of his second concussion in 11 months, and the San Diego Chargers say they don’t know if he’ll be ready for Sunday’s crucial game at Pittsburgh.

Steve Tovar, the Cincinnati Bengals’ leading tackler, suffered torn knee ligaments in a loss to Jacksonville and was put on injured reserve. He probably will need reconstructive surgery.

Thurman Thomas said the play-calling in the Buffalo Bills’ 13-10 loss to Indianapolis was terrible.

Thomas, who, with quarterback Jim Kelly, watched from the sideline because of injuries, cringed while the offense struggled.

“I talked, I cursed, I hollered. I did everything I could possibly imagine to get [the coaches] to try to open it up.” Thomas said. “It seems like it’s a different tone when Jim’s out of there and I’m out of there. They seem to have a little more control over what they want to do.”

Punter Rich Camarillo, signed a week earlier to replace the injured Jeff Gossett, was waived by the Oakland Raiders a day after a groin pull sidelined him against the Miami Dolphins.
