* OREGON STATE (1-1) at LONG BEACH STATE (1-1)

Time--7:30.

The excitement of a season-opening victory over Wyoming faded quickly for Long Beach after losing Saturday to USC, not considered among the Pacific 10 Conference’s elite teams, 77-70. The Trojans outrebounded Long Beach, 46-33. Forward Marcus Johnson, making his debut with the 49ers after serving a one-game suspension for fighting, had three points, one rebound and fouled out while playing 12 minutes. Guard James Cotton continued to play well, matching his personal best with 30 points against USC. Point guard Tommie Davis, suspended for the game against USC, is expected back. Like USC, Oregon State isn’t expected to compete for the Pac-10 title. Guard Carson Cunningham leads the Beavers in scoring and assists, with averages of 22 and five. Four freshmen start for the Beavers, but heralded forward Corey Benjamin is not among them. The NCAA has challenged the ACT score of Benjamin, formerly a standout at Fontana High, and he is ineligible until he retakes the test and receives a qualifying score, according to Oregon State officials.
