SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

O.J. Simpson, who is battling his former in-laws for custody of his two children, briefly took the stand in Family Court on Thursday during what was supposed to have been the final day of the proceedings.

But the 3-week-old trial now is expected to conclude next Wednesday, when attorneys for the children’s maternal grandparents, Louis and Juditha Brown of Dana Point, give their closing arguments.

Simpson was greeted Thursday morning by an unusually large crush of media, but made no comment.

The custody case is closed to the public, and a gag order has also been imposed on all courtroom participants. Superior Court Judge Nancy Wieben Stock, who reportedly is angry that some information from the trial has been leaked to the press, strongly admonished those in the courtroom this week to remain silent.

Meanwhile, Juditha Brown is scheduled to testify in Santa Monica today in the wrongful death case brought against Simpson by the Nicole Brown Simpson estate and the family of Ronald Lyle Goldman.

Simpson’s children have been living with the Browns since their mother’s death. Simpson was acquitted in October 1995 of charges that he killed his ex-wife and Goldman.
