A woman drowned Saturday in a hot tub, according to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

The 23-year-old woman drowned about 3 p.m. in a backyard spa in the 1100 block of Waverly Heights Drive, authorities said.

Deputies are calling the death suspicious. They did not release the woman’s name pending notification of relatives.

At 2:52 p.m., authorities received a 911 call about a woman in a spa who was not breathing.

Sgt. Frank O’Hanlon said that the woman had been found in the spa by the owner of the home. When authorities arrived, they found the partially clad woman lying on the ground next to the spa.

The woman had been submerged for some time, and efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, O’Hanlon said. There was no sign of struggle, and the woman’s body did not show signs of physical harm, authorities said.

The homeowner, whom authorities would not identify, reportedly told deputies he last saw the woman alive at 2:30 p.m.

Paramedics transported the woman to Columbia Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, where she was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m.

The Ventura County medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy today to determine the cause of death.
