Du Pont Found Competent for Murder Trial

Millionaire John E. du Pont, who has spent the last 2 1/2 months undergoing treatment in a psychiatric facility, has been found competent to stand trial for the January slaying of Olympic wrestler David Schultz.

Delaware County Court Judge Patricia Jenkins set a trial date of Jan. 21, citing improvements in du Pont’s mental health and a record that “strongly suggests that the defendant is willing and able to cooperate with everyone,” including his counsel.

Du Pont allegedly shot Schultz Jan. 26 on his estate in Newtown, Pa., then held police at bay for two days outside his mansion.
