Dickerson Scores 30 as Arizona Beats Texas

Michael Dickerson, one of three juniors on a team with no seniors, scored 30 points to lead No. 8 Arizona to an 83-78 nonconference victory over No. 13 Texas on Monday night at Tucson, Ariz.

It was the first loss for the Longhorns (4-1), who earlier Monday got their highest ranking since February 1982, when they were ranked 12th.

Dickerson, who came within one point of his career high, was 10 for 18 from the field, including three for five from three-point range.

Freshman Mike Bibby had 14 points, five assists and a school-record eight steals for the Wildcats (4-1).

Kris Clack had 15 of his 23 points in the second half for Texas, which played a man-to-man defense against the Wildcats.

“I love that,” Dickerson said. “I feel like I can do a lot of damage. Going against a box-and-one [zone] and double teams is hard, but Texas played straight-up.”

No. 3 Kentucky 90, Wright State 62--The Wildcats (6-1) opened the game by making their first five three-point shots and went on the an easy victory over the Raiders (1-1) at Lexington, Ky.

Sophomore forward Ron Mercer, who made five of seven three-point shots, and Derek Anderson, who made two of five, led Kentucky with 19 points apiece.

Kentucky made 13 of 26 shots from three-point range, had 27 assists and held a 42-28 rebound advantage to overcome a sloppy 22 turnovers in winning its sixth in a row.

No. 25 Boston College 59, Vanderbilt 52--Reserves accounted for 32 points as the Eagles (4-1) beat the Commodores (3-2) at Newton, Mass.

Duane Woodward, who scored 15 points, and Danya Abrams, who had 12, were the only starters to score. Bevan Thomas led the reserves with 11 points.

Austin Bates led Vanderbilt with 15 points and Drew Maddox had 11.

California 78, Mississippi State 45--The Golden Bears captured third place at the Franklin National Bank Classic at Landover, Md., bouncing back from a 16-point loss to Maryland on Sunday. Cal (5-2) held the Bulldogs (2-4) to five field goals and 22% shooting in the first half and forced 15 turnovers to take a 44-15 halftime lead. Ed Gray led Cal with 16 points.

“We put the focus back where it belonged--on the defensive end,” Bear Coach Ben Braun said.

In the final, Keith Booth scored 20 of his 29 points in the second half to carry Maryland (6-0) past George Washington, 74-68. The Terrapins are off to their best start since the 1980-81 season.

Alexander Koul led George Washington (5-2) with 24 points.

OTHER GAMES

Michael Heary scored 28 points to lead Navy (6-2) to a 78-64 victory over Gettysburg (5-2), a Division II team, at Annapolis, Md. The Eagles trailed by only two points at halftime. . . . Athletes in Action outscored Louisville, 23-9, midway through the second half to beat the No. 22 Cardinals, 74-62, in an exhibition game at Louisville, Ky. It was the second year in a row that Louisville lost to AIA, but the Cardinals lead the series 11-5. . . . Temple jumped out to an 11-point lead and went on to beat Tulane, 67-49, at Philadelphia. . . . Brad Quinet scored 18 points and San Jose State (4-1) held Division II Cal Poly Pomona (5-1) to four first-half field goals in a 68-55 nonconference victory at San Jose.
