Trabuco Hills Wins Academic Decathlon

Trabuco Hills High School, the top academic decathlon team among local high school teams this year, will represent Orange County in the March 14-16 state competition.

The school was awarded the top spot in a competition among 55 teams from 44 county high schools. Awards were handed out at a recent ceremony that 750 students, parents and administrators attended at the Disneyland Hotel.

The Orange County Department of Education, which organized the contest in November, gave medals to the top five teams in each division.

Following Trabuco Hills High in Division I competition were: Laguna Hills, second; Sunny Hills, third; Los Alamitos, fourth; and John F. Kennedy, fifth. In Division II, Marina High took first place, followed by Brea Olinda and Fairmont Private Schools, which tied for second; Aliso Niguel, third; Marina Vikings and Calvary Chapel, which tied for fourth; and Huntington Beach, fifth.

For the competition, students made presentations and were interviewed Nov. 9 and then took written tests Nov. 16. Students can compete in 10 subjects, ranging from economics and science to literature and fine arts.
