Chapman Center Hertzler Honored

Matt Hertzler, a junior on the Chapman football team, was named first-team GTE Academic All-American, the university announced this week.

Hertzler, a three-year starting center, has a 3.78 grade-point average. His major is exercise physiology.

Hertzler is a graduate of El Dorado High. Hertzler, Jim Ahern, Atlas Helaire and Jason Traut previously were named to the West Region Academic All-American team.

Chapman punter Mario Acosta, who was second in Division III in punting average, was named second-team Hewlett-Packard All-American. Acosta, a junior from Servite High, averaged 44.9 yards.

More honors: Southern California College women’s volleyball players Karajean Stephenson and Christina Fox were named NAIA All-American Scholar Athletes. Stephenson, a senior setter, is a math major with a 3.97 GPA and Fox, a junior outside hitter, is a sociology major with a 3.93 GPA.

Women’s basketball: Chapman forward Lyndsay Brown had her best performance of the season Tuesday night against Siena Heights (Mich.), but the Panthers lost their second consecutive game. Brown made nine of 12 shots and scored a season-high 23 points in a 70-63 loss. Saturday, Brown, a sophomore from Esperanza High, had 18 points in 17 minutes in a 73-52 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Chapman (3-3) hasn’t beaten Claremont in Mary Hegarty’s four seasons as Panther coach. Chapman next plays Dec. 31 at home against College of New Jersey.

Men’s basketball: Southern California College, which has won five consecutive games, will get its second Division I test of the season Friday at San Diego State. The Vanguards (8-2) lost at Utah State, 68-50. San Diego State is 5-2.
