Cal State Fullerton Ranked Ninth in Preseason Baseball Poll

Cal State Fullerton is ranked ninth in the nation in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I preseason poll released Thursday.

Florida State, which finished 52-17 last season, is the top-ranked team. Louisiana State, which defeated Miami, 9-8, to win the College World Series title this spring, is ranked eighth, and Miami 14th.

Long Beach State, which won the Big West Conference tournament last season, is ranked 11th.

Among Pacific 10 schools, UCLA is ranked second, USC sixth, Arizona State 12th, Stanford 15th, California 30th and Arizona 40th.

Bill Wilson, a guard for Saddleback College’s football team, has signed a letter of intent with Montana State, Bill Wilson Sr., his father, said.

Wilson was a two-year starter for the Gauchos and was named All-Mission Conference Central Division this season. He is a graduate of Foothill High.

St. Margaret’s football players Jon Master, Justin Jameson and Nate Aragoni have been named to the All-Freedom League first-team offense.

Masters, Tom Sire and Kevin Roberts were named to the first-team defense. Second-team selections from St. Margaret’s were Dillon Gilbert on offense and Aragoni, Dave King and Greg Fabric on defense.

Costa Mesa High has hired Pacita Vasquez to coach softball and Scott Ferry to coach boys’ swimming.

Vasquez, a walk-on coach, is the Mustangs’ fourth softball coach in three seasons. Ferry, who is a teacher at the school, also coaches the girls’ junior varsity water polo team.
