Harvard-Westlake Doubles Up

Harvard-Westlake High entered the Las Vegas tournament with the goal of strengthening its reputation as a national power.

Consider the mission nearly accomplished.

Harvard-Westlake (9-0) posted two victories Saturday, including an 80-61 victory over Las Vegas Durango, to gain a spot in Monday’s semifinals.

Durango (8-1) is ranked ninth on the West coast by USA Today and Harvard-Westlake is fifth.

Harvard-Westlake posted a 59-54 victory over nationally ranked St. Frances of Baltimore earlier in the day.

The Wolverines held on, even though Jason Collins fouled out and Jarron Collins played with four fouls.

St. Frances (7-2) is ranked No. 17 by USA Today.

Jason Collins had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jarron added 12 points and 10 rebounds against St. Frances.

The brothers improved on those numbers in Harvard-Westlake’s second game. Jason had 19 points and nine rebounds and Jarron added 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Wolverine guard Rico Cabrera had 15 points against Durango.

Pasadena 76, Moorpark 65--Three technical fouls and an ejection helped the Bulldogs (6-4) outscore the Musketeers, 33-12, in the fourth quarter of a La Canada tournament game.

With six minutes remaining and the score tied, 54-54, Keith Donahoe was assessed a technical foul, followed by a second technical given to the Moorpark bench. Brooke Ewing converted two free throws and Pasadena never trailed again.

Moorpark’s Kalani Ferreria received a technical later in the quarter and reserve Hamilton Le was ejected with less than a minute remaining after intentionally fouling Lucas Gladden.

Gladden finished with 37 points and 12 rebounds for Pasadena.

Kevin Lawrence scored 19 points for Moorpark (7-3).

St. Francis 48, La Canada 46--Anthony Johnson scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Golden Knights (6-2) in the La Canada tournament. Matthew Moore scored 24 points for La Canada (5-4).

Burroughs 75, McRoberts (Canada) 57--Juan Zavala made five three-pointers and scored 25 points for the Indians (4-5) in the La Canada tournament.

J.K. Scott had 19 points and Glenn Adriatico added 12 for Burroughs.

Glendale 68, Notre Dame 61--Armen Haghnazarian hit six three-pointers for the Dynamiters (4-6) in an upset at the La Canada tournament.

The senior guard finished with 26 points, and Glendale was aided by 32 points from reserves. Monte Taylor had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Jorge Piedra scored 12 points for Notre Dame (6-3) and Chris Sorde had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Muir 81, Village Christian 59--Joe Bakhoum scored 19 points and had 10 assists and seven rebounds for the Mustangs (7-3) at the La Canada tournament.

Matt Thorpe had 21 points for the Crusaders (3-4) and Paul Tait added 18 for Village Christian.

Santa Clara 58, Agoura 48--Sophomore guard Nick Jones scored 25 of his 27 points in the final three quarters for the Saints (3-0) in a nonleague game at Santa Clara.

Marcus Helfman scored 22 points for Agoura (2-5). Brad Beeson added 10 for Santa Clara.

Burbank 67, Mission 56--Bobby Moore had 18 points and Steve Silveria added 14 for the Bulldogs (6-3) in a seventh-place game at the Berkeley tournament.

San Fernando 63, University 58--Tyrone Purnell scored 18 points and Bryson Atkins added 16 for the Tigers (4-4) in the third-place game of the Van Nuys tournament.
