Valencia Upsets No. 7 Capistrano Valley, 49-42

Valencia upset Capistrano Valley, the top-seeded team in the Orange Holiday Classic and the county’s seventh-ranked team, 49-42, in a quarterfinal game Friday at Chapman University.

John Frechette was eight for eight from the free-throw line and scored 12 of his 16 points during the fourth quarter for the Tigers. Ryan Thurlow scored a game-high 23 points for the Cougars.

In other quarterfinal games:

Huntington Beach 56, Kennedy 37--Chris Basich scored 16 points and Nick Sinclair had 11 for Huntington Beach (9-2), which will play Orange in today’s semifinals.

Orange 56, Long Beach Jordan 42--Juan Dotson scored 16 points for Orange. Teammate Steve Lein scored 14 points for the Panthers.

In a consolation game:

Fountain Valley 56, San Jose Archbishop Mitty 42--Ryan Moreau scored 16 points for Fountain Valley (5-6). Ben Rogers also scored 12 points and Zach Hardin and Aaron Carter each scored 10 points for the Barons. Fountain Valley made 10 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

In the quarterfinals of the Brea Olinda tournament:

Troy 67, San Diego Rancho Buena Vista 64--Sophomore Jerry Inzunza led all scorers with 29 points for Troy. Scott Blake also scored 12 points for the Warriors. Jamahl Mosley scored 23 points for Rancho Buena Vista.

In the second round of the Canyon Tournament:

Costa Mesa 56, St. Alberts (Canada) 48--Costa Mesa jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the first quarter and never relinquished the lead. Matt Chaisson scored 16 points and Bryan Leahy scored 15 for the Mustangs.

El Dorado 68, Marina 66 (OT)--Ryan Ayer, who scored 26 points, made a turn-around jump shot with six seconds left in overtime to clinch the victory for El Dorado. Marina battled back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Don Lank scored 19 points for Marina.

Loara 56, La Crescenta Crescenta Valley 48--Loara (8-4) outscored Crescenta Valley (6-5), 16-6, in the third quarter. Neil Thomas scored eight of his 21 points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth for Loara. Martin Banda also scored 11 points for the Saxons. Anbrius Ragauskas scored 11 points for Crescenta Valley.

In the second round of the Century tournament:

Century 55, Calvary Chapel 53 (2 OT)--Century trailed fifth-ranked Calvary Chapel by eight points after three quarters. But Terrail Zoller scored eight of his 18 points in the fourth quarter to help Century send the game into overtime.

Ricky Lopez scored four of his 14 points in the second overtime for Century (7-5). Joe Ortiz scored 18 points for Calvary Chapel (9-3).

Santa Ana Valley 86, Sunny Hills 63--Seth Roblee scored 20 points for Santa Ana Valley (6-5). Jason Maughan scored 20 points for Sunny Hills (4-7).

In the second round of the La Puente Nogales tournament:

San Clemente 70, La Verne Damien 37--Semaj Johnson scored 25 points, including six three-pointers, and Jan Tatala added 21 points for the Tritons (10-1), who advanced to the semifinals. San Clemente shot 68% from the field, making 25 of 37 field goals.

In the Nike National Prep Classic:

Oyster Bay (N.Y.) St. Dominic 57, Dana Hills 48--Chris Gazzo and Mike Bose each scored 17 points as Oyster Bay St. Dominic (3-0) defeated Dana Hills to advance to the quarterfinals.

Tadeu Souza scored 19 points for the Dolphins (9-3), who play the loser of L.A. Crenshaw-Upland game in the Nike Strong Division.

Larry Page and Todd Pittman each scored 10 points for Dana Hills.

In a second-round game at the Mt. Carmel Tournament:

Mission Viejo 81, Santa Monica 55--All five Mission Viejo starters scored in double figures. Gabe Burt led the Diablos (6-3) with 25 points, seven assists and seven rebounds.

In the Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Tournament:

Middle Village (N.Y.) Christ the King 66, Woodbridge 54--Eric Barkley scored 12 points in the fourth quarter as Middle Village Christ the King outscored third-ranked Woodbridge, 28-17, in the fourth quarter. The score was tied at 42-42 with five minutes left to play when Christ the King began to pull away.

Woodbridge responded, but got into foul trouble late. Christ the King (4-2), ranked fourth in the nation by USA Today, was 16 of 16 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Barkley was eight for eight in the fourth quarter.

Chris Burgess scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds for the Warriors (8-2). Brandon Beeson scored eight points and had 11 rebounds for Woodbridge.
