Sailors First League Team to Defeat Irvine in Wrestling

Newport Harbor handed Irvine its first Sea View League wrestling loss ever, 38-29, Thursday at Irvine High. The Vaqueros hadn’t lost a league meet since joining the league in 1992.

Freshman Michael Snyder pinned Irvine’s Dominic Ricco in 52 seconds at 189 pounds for visiting Newport Harbor (2-0, 1-0 in league).

C.H. Rush pinned Newport Harbor’s Tom Cook in 1 minute 11 seconds at 145 pounds for Irvine (0-2, 0-1).

In another Sea View League meet:

Santa Margarita 40, Woodbridge 33--Heavyweight Ryan Thigpen won by pin in 37 seconds and Ryan Best pinned Woodbridge’s Josh Espinola in 1:25 at 130 pounds to lead Santa Margarita.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 40, Kennedy 24--Ralph Wu won by pin in 2:15 at 152 pounds for El Dorado.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 72, Sonora 10--Troy freshman Johnny Nguyen recorded his first varsity pin at 103 pounds and Andrew Orlando pinned his opponent in 36 seconds at 135 pounds for Troy (10-2). Troy’s Tai Nguyen, top ranked in the county at 119 pounds, also won with a pin.

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 70, Rancho Alamitos 9--Alex Solano (103 pounds), George Guzman (140) and Mike Carrera (145) all won with pins for eighth-ranked Santiago (19-1, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 64, Aliso Niguel 9--Unranked Pat Fields pinned Aliso Niguel’s Ryan Herbon, ranked fifth at 215 pounds, in 4:45 for Laguna Hills. John Webber pinned Aliso Niguel’s Jason Arreola in 5:29 at 119 pounds for Laguna Hills (10-2, 1-0).

In Academy League boys’ basketball:

Orangewood Academy 73, Liberty Christian 40--Joey Oswald had 21 points and made five three-pointers and Nicholas Wolfsen added 16 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots for Orangewood Academy (7-3, 1-0).

In Sunset League girls’ water polo:

Los Alamitos 14, Esperanza 6--Shelli Linza scored five goals and Kristin Guerin added three for top-ranked Los Alamitos (11-0, 2-0).

Edison 20, Huntington Beach 2--Kami Fleming scored five goals and Brooke Fleming added four for Edison (7-5, 1-1), which outscored Huntington Beach (3-10, 0-2), 10-0, in the second half.

Marina 13, Fountain Valley 7--Jenny Lamb scored all five of her goals in the first half and Rebecca Miller had four for fourth-ranked Marina (6-1, 2-0).

In Newport Harbor/Corona del Mar tournament first-round games:

Costa Mesa 10, Corona del Mar 9--Amy Devey and Jamie Smith each scored two goals for Costa Mesa (4-5).

Villa Park 9, Capistrano Valley 8 (OT)--Kristin Thompson scored three goals for Villa Park, ranked second in the county. Jessica Povey scored three goals for Capistrano Valley (5-5).

Santa Barbara 6, Newport Harbor 5--Alden Moore scored three goals for host Newport Harbor (5-2), ranked sixth in Orange County.

Mission Viejo 14, Mission Hills Alemany 4--Nicole Stanistas and Erin Esses each scored four goals for Mission Viejo (7-3).
