Millionaire chemicals heir John du Pont acted...
Millionaire chemicals heir John du Pont acted from within an “abyss of insanity” when he killed Olympic champion wrestler David Schultz, his lawyer told a jury on the first day of du Pont’s murder trial in Media, Pa. Attorney Thomas Bergstrom said that du Pont, 58, had suffered from paranoid schizophrenia for years and that the disease reached an intense stage Jan. 26, 1996, when he shot Schultz. He sought to use the testimony of Schultz’s widow to bolster du Pont’s insanity defense. Du Pont is being tried on charges of first-degree murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
