Pierce (the Pitcher) Holds Off Pierce (the Team)

Jeremy Pierce survived a rocky outing in relief and Ventura College held on to defeat Pierce, 6-5, Saturday in a nonconference opener at Ventura.

Ventura led, 6-2, after six innings behind the pitching of Dustin Brink, who struck out six and allowed one earned run.

Pierce, a sophomore from Ventura High, allowed three runs in three innings but earned the save by pitching out of trouble in the ninth.

Chris Cicuto had two hits and scored two runs, and Manny Mosqueda doubled, singled and drove in a run for the Pirates.

Kirk Mayer had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in three runs for Pierce.

Oxnard 5, L.A. City 4--James Rodriguez hit a two-out, two-run single in the eighth and final inning to lift the Condors in the a Citrus tournament game at Stengel Field in Glendale.

Daniel Martinez (1-0) pitched a complete game, striking out five before the game was called because of a time limit.

Earlier, the Condors (3-1) defeated Glendale, 10-4, behind catcher Mike Muller, who had two hits, including a two-run home run. He drove in three runs.

Canyons 11, Long Beach City 5--Craig Hennes and Robbie Rayfield each had two hits and two RBIs for Canyons in a round-robin game of the South Bay tournament.

The victory was the second of the day for Canyons (2-0), which defeated Harbor, 11-2, in its first game behind a school-record 10 doubles.

Danny Bir had three doubles and three RBIs for the Cougars and Jesse Daggett had two hits and three RBIs.

Harbor 6, Valley 0--Steve Riggs held the Seahawks hitless through five innings but came out after reaching his pitch count and the bullpen couldn’t hold on in a round-robin South Bay tournament game.

Valley’s Ed Jung hit a leadoff single in the sixth inning to break up Justin Miller’s no-hitter.

In an earlier game Alonso Arreola had two hits and Jung doubled in a 4-2 loss to Long Beach City.

The Monarchs (0-2) will play East L.A. and Cerritos today.
