Search Continues for Man Swept Out to Sea

Share

Authorities continued search efforts Monday to find a Hermosa Beach man who was swept out to sea near the Manhattan Beach Pier on Friday night when a strong rip current pulled him from the shore.

Police believe that Richard Kirby, 18, was walking on the beach with two friends when they stopped to get their feet wet, according to Sgt. Tony Digenova. A rough current apparently pulled them from the beach. Kirby’s friends made it back to shore but told police that their friend drifted north of the pier as he screamed for help.

Divers from the county Fire Department began their search late Friday. Lt. Robert Moore said a rescue boat was dispatched early Monday, but the underwater search was called off at noon when the ocean became too rough. He said lifeguards will continue their boat search today.
