Servite’s Coats Plans to Sign at San Jose State

David Coats, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound tight end and defensive end who helped Servite reach the semifinals of the Southern Section Division V playoffs, has orally committed to San Jose State, his mother, Louise, said Tuesday.

Coats, who had 18 1/2 sacks, was named defensive MVP of the Golden West League and was a Times Orange County first-team member.

Troy’s Kyion Grayes, the county’s fifth-leading rusher with 1,728 yards, will sign a letter of intent today to play at Arizona State, said his father, Lagary.

Other county football players committing include Brian Koupal, a tight end from El Toro, to Villanova; Matt Steinau a linebacker from El Toro, to Montana; and Marcus Mullins, a strong safety from Esperanza, who will attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Soccer

Walter Camargo, a midfielder for Mater Dei who turned down an offer last summer to play professional soccer in Europe for one of France’s premier club teams, has orally committed to UC Irvine, Monarch Coach Martin Stringer announced.

Several members of the Mission Viejo Shamrocks club soccer team have made oral college commitments, Coach Rich Abbamonto said. Ann Giallonardo (defender, Marina High) has committed to Arizona; Stacy Roberts (midfielder, Laguna Hills) has chosen Loyola Marymount; and Riki-Ann Serrins (goalkeeper, Santa Margarita) committed to Maryland.

Other county girls committing include Sommer Hammoud, a midfielder for Los Alamitos, to UCLA; Jill Pearson, a forward for El Modena, to Fresno State; Kirsten Roy, a goalkeeper for Aliso Niguel, to UC Irvine; and Andrea Warner, a midfielder for Dana Hills, to USC.

Softball

Kathy Moore, a pitcher and first basemen who pitched five no-hitters for Garden Grove last season, has orally committed to play softball for New Mexico, her father said.

Swimming

Laura Tucker, a specialist in the 100 backstroke who transferred from Huntington Beach High to Fountain Valley this year, has orally committed to Ohio University, her mother, Lois said.

Volleyball

Kristi Sprinkel of Santa Margarita has orally committed to play volleyball this fall at Boston College. Sprinkel played for the Eagles in 1995 and returned to Santa Margarita for her final semester after playing last fall in Indiana.

Water Polo

Mike Foley, a two-meter man who scored 134 goals last season for Tustin, has orally committed to UC Irvine to play water polo, Tiller Athletic Director Al Rosmino said.
