Long Beach State Scores Early, Hangs On

Long Beach State scored three runs in the first inning and held on for a 4-2 victory over California in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Blair Field.

Izzy Gonzalez’s run-scoring single and a two-run double by Toby Sanchez gave Long Beach State (3-4) a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

A sacrifice fly by Keith Cowley third gave the 49ers a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning.

Junior Marcus Jones (1-2) from Esperanza High pitched seven innings, giving up seven hits, striking out eight and walking two.

Ara Petrosian of Fountain Valley High and Cypress College gave up one hit, struck out four and walked one in two innings of relief to earn his second save. Petrosian has made five appearances stretching his scoreless innings streak to 11 1/3.

Drew Fischer (1-2) gave up five hits, struck out six and walked two in the loss for Cal (5-5).

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Cal State Fullerton 78, Pacific 55--The Titans won their third consecutive conference game behind point guard Andrea Thieme, who had 17 points and four assists. The victory keeps Cal State Fullerton (9-12, 4-6) on pace for a berth in the conference tournament.

The Titans led by only seven at the half, despite shooting 62% from the floor, but outscored the Tigers, 42-26, in the second half.

Four other Titans scored in double figures, including Dee Braxton who had 14 points and Kristen Sigg with 13, and Jackie Bucher and Kim Cram each scored 10.

Long Beach State 77, UC Irvine 68--Long Beach State trailed by six at the half, but outscored Irvine in the second half, 51-36.

Toby Metoyer scored 23 points, making 10 of 12 shots from the field, and Kesha Wade had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the 49ers (8-13, 5-5).

Shannon Anders led Irvine (11-11, 6-5) with a career-high 23 points and Leticia Oseguera added 19.

In a nonconference game:

Concordia 72, Christian Heritage 49--Heather Carll had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Concordia. Allison Fortner scored 15 and Angela Sather had 14 points and eight rebounds for Concordia.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, San Diego State 0--Geoff Cryst had 24 kills as Long Beach State defeated San Diego State, 15-9, 17-15, 15-9. Teammate Chris Seiffer had 66 assists for the 49ers (8-2, 3-2).

Brian Costo had 20 kills for San Diego State (0-9, 0-7).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Pepperdine 6, UC Irvine 1--David Chang defeated Pepperdine’s Aron Breziner in singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Rob Walker and Cameron Lindee won in doubles for UC Irvine (1-4), 8-6.
