Not a Good Knight for Pepperdine

Frank Knight made two free throws with four seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift St. Mary’s to a 69-67 win over Pepperdine in Malibu on Saturday.

It was the fourth victory in a row for the Gaels (18-7, 8-4 West Coast Conference), who got 20 points from Knight. The Waves (6-18, 4-8) were led by Marques Johnson’s season-high 23 points.

In another WCC game, Marlon Garnett scored 18 points and Brian Jones added 16 to lead Santa Clara (14-10, 8-4) past Loyola Marymount, 68-62, and into a tie for first place. Tim Kennedy led the Lions (6-18, 3-9) with 18 points.

BIG WEST CONFERENCE

Long Beach State 85, UC Santa Barbara 77--Guard James Cotton’s 31 points helped the 49ers (10-12, 6-6) get past the Gauchos (10-12, 5-7) at Goleta.

Nevada 71, Cal State Fullerton 59--Paul Culbertson scored 22 points as the Wolf Pack (15-7, 9-3) rolled over the Titans (11-11, 4-8) at Reno to remain tied for the conference lead.

Utah State 87, UC Irvine 50--The Aggies (16-7, 9-3) routed the Anteaters (1-20, 1-11) behind Maurice Spillers’ 22 points at Logan, Utah. Lamarr Parker scored 21 for Irvine.

In other games, Shanta Cotright’s layup off an offensive rebound with .02 seconds remaining lifted Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (12-13, 5-7) to a 93-92 upset of first-place Pacific (18-4, 9-3) at San Luis Obispo. . . . Led by Roberto Bergersen’s 18 points, Boise State (13-9, 8-4) defeated North Texas (9-13, 4-8) 66-54, at Boise, Idaho.

BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Cal State Northridge 80, Portland State 76--Derrick Higgins, Trenton Cross and Kevin Taylor hit two free throws apiece in the final 24 seconds to lead the Matadors (10-12, 6-6) over the Vikings (9-15, 6-8) at Portland.

In another Big Sky game, Idaho State (12-10, 8-6), with six players in double figures, defeated Sacramento State (3-19, 2-10), 84-66, at Sacramento.
