Michigan Coach Steve Fisher decided to go with a three-guard offense against Purdue on Sunday in hopes of snapping the No. 18 Wolverines out of a slump and reviving their NCAA tournament hopes, but the move backfired in a 67-58 Big Ten Conference loss at West Lafayette, Ind.

Fisher sat down forward Jerod Ward, who scored a career-high 19 points last month as Michigan defeated Purdue, 67-52, in favor of guard Brandun Hughes. But Ward didn’t respond to the reserve role and he quickly got into foul trouble and was limited to only three points in seven minutes.

Purdue outscored Michigan, 23-7, from the free-throw line, overcoming 40% shooting from the field. Chad Austin led the way with 25 points.
