Boris Becker was out of the Italian Indoors without playing a single game, and Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek went out following an exhausting battle of 36 games against Sergi Bruguera at Milan.

Bruguera, the unseeded Spaniard, produced the first big upset by defeating second-seeded Krajicek, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (15-13). Bruguera won the decisive third-set tie-breaker after surviving three match points.

Becker, a four-time winner in Milan and seeded third, pulled out after the draw, blaming continuing wrist pains. ATP doctors said Becker will rest for three weeks.

Qualifier Sjenj Schalken of the Netherlands upset fifth-seeded Jason Stoltenberg of Australia, 6-2, 6-4, in the opening round of the Advanta Championships at Philadelphia.

Thomas Johansson of Sweden, ranked 65th, stopped eighth-seeded Greg Rusedski of Britain, 6-4, 6-2, in another first round match and seventh-seeded Alex O’Brien fell to 80th-ranked Juan Albert Viloca of Spain, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Green Bay Packer cornerback Tyrone Williams reported to jail in Lincoln, Neb., to begin serving a six-month sentence for shooting at a car. Procedural delays enabled Williams to play at Nebraska and in the NFL after he was charged in the Jan. 30, 1994, shooting. Williams pleaded no contest to charges of third-degree assault and unlawful discharge of a gun.

The San Francisco 49ers worked out salary-cap problems and signed Oakland Raider free-agent offensive lineman Kevin Gogan to a six-year, $12.5-million contract after restructuring the contract of running back Terry Kirby.

Arthur Johnson (15-3, 8 KOs), defended his NABF flyweight championship for the second time after earning a 12-round decision over Sammy Stewart at the Forum. Los Angeles’ Ed Mahone scored a third-round knockout over Bomani Parker in the heavyweight division to improve to 9-0-1.

PGA Seniors champion Hale Irwin shot a seven-under-par 65 to take the lead after the first round of the Senior Slam golf tournament at San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico. Raymond Floyd shot a 70 and was second, and U.S. Senior Open winner Dave Stockton was third at 72. Jack Nicklaus was fourth at 73.

San Diego and Qualcomm Inc. reached an agreement to rename Jack Murphy Stadium after the high-tech company in exchange for $18 million in cash needed to complete expansion of the facility. Under the deal, expected to be approved by the City Council today, the stadium would be called Qualcomm Stadium at Jack Murphy Sports Complex.

Norway’s Bjorn Dahlie earned a 27.9-second victory in a 10-kilometer classical-style cross-country race at the World Nordic Ski Championships at Trondheim, Norway. Elena Valbe of Russia edged Stefania Belmondo of Italy in a photo-finish to win the women’s pursuit. . . . University of Houston Athletic Director Bill Carr announced he is leaving the job March 31.

Andrea Neipp of Palmdale Highland High, the 1996 state and Southern Section Division II cross-country champion, has made a commitment to Brigham Young. Neipp will join a Cougar program that placed third in last year’s NCAA cross-country championships.

Fox Sports and its parent companies have filed a counter complaint against the Walt Disney Co. and two of its subsidiaries, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and ESPN, in response to a suit the Ducks filed against Fox for moving its telecasts from Fox Sports West to Fox Sports West 2.

Fox, in its counter complaint, contends Disney entities have induced and persuaded the largest cable operators in Southern California to boycott Fox Sports West 2. Fox contends Disney, through ESPN, plans to launch its own regional sports network.
