Leonard Gives El Camino Real Another Upset Special, 1-0

The joy ride continues for the El Camino Real High boys’ soccer team, which defeated Hollywood, 1-0, Friday in a City Section playoff quarterfinal.

The Conquistadores (19-3-6), seeded 17th in the 32-team draw, advance to a semifinal Tuesday at fourth-seeded Los Angeles. El Camino Real previously defeated 16th-seeded Lincoln and top-seeded Reseda.

Jason Leonard scored 19 minutes into overtime and a minute before a sudden-death period was to begin against ninth-seeded Hollywood.

The senior forward collected a Shiek turnover in the penalty area and knocked a 16-yard shot underneath the goalkeeper in the 99th minute for his 15th goal.

Goalkeeper Phil Graham, who was instrumental in Wednesday’s upset of Reseda, was solid once again, stopping 10 shots.

El Camino Real Coach David Hussey, whose team was Northwest Valley Conference runner-up, said the Conquistadores are not lacking for motivation.

“At first the kids were really upset because we didn’t get a home game [in the first round],” Hussey said. “Now we’re trying to prove to everyone that we deserved a higher seed. It’s about respect and we’ll have to win five games on the road to get it.”

El Camino Real is 41-28-16 in four seasons under Hussey, who restarted the program after it was disbanded for the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.

The Conquistadores lost in the first round each of the last two runs.

Garfield 1, Kennedy 0--Miguel Espino scored on a breakaway 17 minutes into overtime and the Golden Cougars (11-8-5) lost a City quarterfinal at Garfield.

GIRLS

Cleveland 1, Monroe 1--The visiting Cavaliers won a shootout, 3-0, and will advance to the City 3-A semifinals.

Fifteenth-seeded Monroe, the Mid-Valley League champion, took a 1-0 lead six minutes into overtime when Ruth Hebert scored her 22nd goal off a pass from Liz Nemeth.

But 11 minutes later, Modesta Salmeron scored to tie the match, 2 1/2 minutes before a scoreless 10-minute sudden-death period began.

Blumstein, Dahvi Wilson and Delilah Perez scored shootout goals for seventh-seeded Cleveland, which finished third in the West Valley League.
