Mater Dei Beats Ventura Buena With Late Goal

Bret Corbin scored on a set play with nine minutes remaining to give top-seeded Mater Dei a 2-1 victory over Ventura Buena in a Southern Section Division II semifinal game Tuesday at Mater Dei.

The Monarchs (23-1-3), who will be playing in their second section final in four years, will meet San Bernardino San Gorgonio, a 3-0 winner over Yucaipa, in the championship game Friday or Saturday at Cerritos Gahr High.

Mater Dei goalkeeper Jeff McKeever stopped eight shots, including a crucial save off a free kick in the first half.

In Division III:

Santa Margarita 4, Moorpark 0--Ryan Coiner scored two goals as Santa Margarita advanced to the championship game.

The Eagles (16-7-4) have reached the semifinals in six of the last seven years, but won their only title in 1993. Santa Margarita, which posted its sixth consecutive shutout, will play Torrance Friday or Saturday at Cerritos Gahr High.

In Division IV:

Laguna Beach 3, Whittier Pioneer 1--Tyler Wolfe scored in the 55th minute to seal Laguna Beach’s 15th consecutive victory and a berth in the final. The Artists will play Pasadena La Salle.

Mark Ornelas also scored in the second half for Laguna Beach (19-4-3). Bobby Ehdaie scored the Artists’ first goal in the first half.
