Arrendondo Leads Titans in Women’s Tennis

Alejandra Arrendondo won the deciding third-set tie-breaker, 7-3, as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 5-4, in nonconference women’s tennis.

Arrendondo won the match, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, for Cal State Fullerton (4-4).

Debbie Vonusa and Jennifer Canfield won in doubles, 9-7, after trailing 2-7 and surviving two match points for the Titans. Vonusa also won her singles’ match defeating Christa Brown, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

In Golden State Athletic conference men’s baseball:

Westmont 4, Concordia 2--Westmont (8-11, 4-3) has won three without a loss playing Concordia (8-11, 0-6) this season.

In the Golden State Athletic conference women’s basketball tournament:

Azusa Pacific 61, Southern California College 39--All-GSAC guard Kelly Speas scored eight of her 13 points in the second half to lead Azusa Pacific, which outscored SCC, 38-16 ,in the second half for the opening-round victory.

In reserve, Pilar Surch, a graduate of Pacifica High, led Azusa Pacific (16-14) with a season-high 15 points. Andrea Macciola grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.

Elaine Whittemore led SCC (18-11) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Carrie Burt added 11 points before fouling out with three minutes left to play.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State San Bernardino 3-6, Southern California College 2-2--Christina Blankenship was 4 for 4 in the second game for Southern California College (3-17-1). Noelle Sturgill had two RBIs for the Vanguards.

Blankenship also had two hits and an RBI in the first game.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 5, Cal State L.A. 2--SCC swept in doubles and won four of six singles matches to improve to 6-0. Brian Matek defeated Rob Lansford, 7-5, 6-2, to lead SCC in singles.
