Division IV-A Boys’ Final

Santa Monica Crossroads vs. Calvary Chapel

Where--Bren Center, 6:15 tonight.

Crossroads (26-3)--The defending section champions are shooting for the school’s seventh section title in boys’ basketball and are ranked eighth in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. Playing in a soft playoff division, the Roadrunners have had an easy time, winning by an average margin of 36 points. Guards Cash Warren and Baron Davis make up one of the state’s best backcourts. Look for the Roadrunners to trap and press Calvary Chapel in an attempt to keep the ball out of the hands of Eagle playmaker Kevin Falconer. Sixth-man Garrett Nichols, a junior, adds depth, averaging 10.4 points.

Calvary Chapel (25-4)--The third-seeded Eagles have pointed toward this game all season, playing larger, successful teams prior to the league season to get ready for the playoffs. Although they swept through the Olympic League, the Eagles struggled during the middle of the season. They’re shooting better now, they say. Guard Kevin Falconer has been a mainstay, averaging 9.1 assists and during the playoffs he has averaged 20 points. Joe Ortiz, forced to play off-guard in what is really a three-forward attack, has been solid as the team’s leading scorer.

Key to the game--The defending champions should dominate the backboards, an area where Calvary Chapel is weak. Forward David Williams of Calvary Chapel is listed as day to day with a cracked rib. The Eagles will live and die with the three-point shot. If they shoot anything like the eight for 21 from three-point land that they did against Mater Dei two years ago at the Bren, the Eagles will be in the game. How well Falconer handles the trap is crucial.
