Workshop to Focus on Radio System Funds

Share

How to pay for Huntington Beach’s share of a countywide emergency radio system will be one of several items discussed by the City Council at a Monday night workshop.

The police, fire, public works and marine rescue agencies for Orange County and its cities will use the same system, enabling them to talk to each other directly in a crisis.

The new $80-million system, based on 800-megahertz radio frequencies, will also extend the range of communications for several miles, which officials say will be helpful for police pursuits, and when a fire department is helping another city fight a blaze.

“I think it’s a tremendous investment, and it’s technology that will be here for a while,” Huntington Beach Fire Chief Michael P. Dolder said.

The present system is about 25 years old.

Huntington Beach has already set aside about $1.8 million for its share in the new system, and needs to raise another $4.1 million. The council will discuss issuing 30-year bonds to generate that money as well as the $2.8 million needed for the Pier Plaza Project, the extensive gateway planned for the municipal pier.

In addition, the council will discuss options to replace the closed Central Park gun range.

The workshop will be at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 2000 Main St. Information: (714) 536-5553.
