Calvary Poised to Retain Title

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel took a big step Friday toward successfully defending its state title as the Eagles racked up 72 points to take a comfortable lead in the state wrestling championships at University of the Pacific.

San Jose Independence, which lost to Calvary Chapel by half a point last year, trailed by 33 points in second and San Diego Poway was in third with 38 1/2 at the end of Friday’s competition.

Calvary Chapel tightened the clamps early in the day, with eight of its nine wrestlers advancing to the second round.

Four Eagles then advanced to the semifinal round, and four more are still alive in the consolation rounds.

Calvary Chapel is trying to win its fourth state title in five years. If the Eagles do win, only Clovis, with six, would have more state titles.
