Penberthy’s 48 Enough for Master’s

Mike Penberthy scored a career-high 48 points and The Master’s College beat Rockhurst (Mo.), 103-99, in overtime Saturday to win the NAIA Southwest Region Independent basketball tournament at Texas Wesleyan.

The Mustangs (21-10) will play in the NAIA national tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

Penberthy, a 6-foot-3 senior, made 16 of 24 shots, including seven of 14 from three-point range. He made all nine of his free throws and had six assists.

Freshman Jerome Joseph scored 17 points for Master’s and Jon Ordonio added 10.

Brian Merchant scored 42 points for Rockhurst (19-11).

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 2-3, Claremont-Mudd 5-2--Tom McGee’s home run with two out in the ninth gave the Kingsmen (14-4, 11-1) a split of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Mike Young’s home run to lead off the inning tied the score, 2-2.

Pierce 10, Valley 9--The Brahmas won the Western State Conference game on Tony Montiel’s two-run double in the 11th inning at Pierce.

Montiel had three hits and two runs batted in, and Jimmy Landress went two for two and walked four times for the Brahmas.

Canyons 7, Bakersfield 0--Jim McNeel (5-1) pitched a six-hitter and struck out five for the Cougars (14-5, 4-1) in a WSC game at Bakersfield (13-5, 4-1).

Dan Bir had two hits and drove in three runs for Canyons.

Hawaii-Hilo 3, Pepperdine 2--A triple by Tyler Ferrer keyed a two-run fourth for the Waves, who fell for the second day in a row in Hawaii.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 6-5, Pomona 1-4--Julie DiFatta had three hits in the first game of a SCIAC doubleheader, and added a triple and a double for the Regals (13-1, 11-1) in the second game.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge d. Hawaii, 7-15, 15-8, 13-15, 16-14, 15-12--Chad Strickland had 29 kills and 18 digs for the Matadors (7-7, 4-6) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Northridge.

Jason Hughes added 29 kills and 15 digs, and Collin Smith had 25 kills and 11 digs for Northridge.
