Library Prepares for Annual Book Sale

The annual used book and magazine sale at the city’s branch library will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Friends of the Stanton Library will offer older, well-known novels and biographies along with some near-new books. Children’s books, paperbacks and low-priced nonfiction books will also be on sale.

The annual sale has been held since the library operated out of a tiny storefront on Cerritos Avenue, said Dorothy Miller, book sales chairwoman for the library support group. Miller worked at both the Cerritos Avenue site and the library’s current location, at 7850 Katella Ave., which opened in 1976.

The City Council recently approved spending $5,000 to open the library a fourth day each week until the end of June.

Miller said the library needs funds from the book sale to help renew magazine subscriptions and to purchase new books and audio books. In comparison with other county libraries, Stanton is low on the funding list, Miller said.

After the county changed the way funds are allocated to branch libraries, the Stanton library’s budget was cut by $89,000 for the current fiscal year.

“Stanton is at the bottom of the barrel because the branch is so small,” Miller said. “We’re trying to help by volunteering our time and having these book sales to make extra money.”
