A quest for an unprecedented third consecutive City Section baseball title resumes for Kennedy High when the Golden Cougars play host to El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game at 3 p.m. today.

Kennedy (4-2) showed signs of shaking a sluggish start Tuesday when standout right-hander Jon Garland pitched six innings in a 6-4 victory at El Camino Real.

Beyond Garland, however, the Golden Cougars lack a definitive No. 2 pitcher. But there is no shortage of candidates.

Senior right-hander Alex Lopez (1-1) was shelled against South Gate but pitched five strong innings in a victory over Highland.

Junior left-handers Wes Crown (1-0) and Tim Arroyo are battling for a spot in the rotation. So is junior right-hander Jack Cassel, a transfer from Notre Dame.

“If we can put together a pitching performance on the second day of the week, we could be awesome,” Kennedy Coach Manny Alvarado said.
