GIRLS’ STATE TOURNAMENT AT POND OF ANAHEIM

DIVISION I

Berkeley (28-3) vs. Crenshaw (27-3), Saturday, 6 p.m., Fox Sports West 2

Crenshaw is making its first appearance in a girls’ state championship game. The Cougars, City Section titlists, have six players averaging in double figures, including senior forward Naila Moseley (16 points, 13 rebounds), senior center Jovanae St. Cyr (16 points) and senior guard Kisha Shephard (12 points). Berkeley, North Coast Section champion, is making its third finals appearance since 1990. The Yellowjackets defeated Inglewood Morningside, 76-50, to win the 1991 state title. Shavaki Jackson, a 6-foot-4 center, leads Berkeley by averaging 24 points and 14 rebounds.

DIVISION II

Newark Memorial (30-1) vs. Laguna Hills (30-3), Friday, 6:15 p.m.

North Coast Section champion Newark Memorial defeated top-seeded Fair Oaks Del Campo, 52-44, to reach the state finals for the first time. Ami Forney, a 6-2 junior who averages 21 points, scored 14 for the Cougars and Amber Donn added 11. Southern Section champion Laguna Hills, ranked No. 2 in the state, defeated top-ranked Brea Olinda, 40-29, last Saturday in the Southern Regional championship game to reach its first state final. Memorial will have to stop 6-6 senior center Tayyiba Haneef, who is averaging 13 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Tamara Inoue and forward Whitney Houser also are averaging in double figures. The key for the Hawks is defense. They haven’t allowed an opponent to score more than 50 points this season.

DIVISION III

Lafayette Acalanes (27-6) vs. Torrance Bishop Montgomery (27-3), Saturday, 1:15 p.m.

North Coast Section champion Acalanes has six freshmen on the team and three are starters. The group played like veterans last Saturday in a 55-52 victory over Grass Valley Bear River, a four-time regional finalist in the 1990s. The Dons are led by senior Megan McCosker, who averages 10 points and five rebounds. But against Bear River, freshman Corrie Mizusawa scored 17. The young group will be tested by a seasoned Bishop Montgomery team that won the Division III title last year over Bear River. Senior forward Tashara Carter (13 points) and senior guard Danielle Graham (17 points) led Bishop Montgomery’s four double-figure scorers in its 74-42 victory over Chula Vista Eastlake in the Southern Regional finals.

DIVISION IV

Moraga Campolindo (32-2) vs. Playa Del Rey St. Bernard (25-6), Saturday, 10 a.m.

The teams have combined to win the last four state finals in Division IV, with Campolindo winning the last two over Cerritos Valley Christian, 77-60 last year and 62-37 in 1995. Campolindo, which also won in 1990, trails Brea Olinda (five), San Diego Point Loma (four) and Atherton Sacred Heart (four) for most girls’ state championships. Senior forward Courtney Moll, who averages 15 points, led the Cougars with 26 points in a 59-50 victory over Justin-Siena in the Northern Regional final. St. Bernard prepared for the postseason by battling Bishop Montgomery and Bishop Amat for a share of the Del Rey League title. The Vikings, who won Division IV titles in 1993 and ‘94, have five players who are 6 feet.

DIVISION V

Santa Rosa Rincon Valley (28-4) vs. El Cajon Christian (29-1), Friday, 2:30 p.m.

North Coast Section champion Rincon Valley gave up only 10 second-half points to shut down Modoc in a 58-23 victory in the Northern Regional title game. The Rabbits are led by 6-2 senior guard Erin Buescher, who averages 24 points and 11 rebounds; and 6-2 junior forward Lesley Dubois, who averages 14 points. Rincon Valley is making its first trip to the finals; Christian, the San Diego Section runner-up to Horizon, is making its record-tying sixth appearance since 1991, joining Brea Olinda among the state’s elite. Christian won titles in 1992 and ’95.
