Mass Planned Monday for Slain Attorney

A funeral mass will be held Monday for a popular Tustin family law attorney gunned down by a man furious at his successful representation of his ex-wife.

The service for Ronald W. Weiss will take place at 11 a.m. at St. Edward’s Catholic Church at 33926 Calle la Primavera in Dana Point.

Weiss, 62, who also served as a part-time family law judge in Orange County Superior Court, was planning to retire within the next year. He was working in his office Tuesday evening when Roger E. Sandsmark, of Huntington Beach, burst in and opened fire. Sandsmark then killed himself, police said.

Authorities believe Sandsmark, 56, a civilian employee at the Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, was upset that Weiss had successfully represented his ex-wife, Evelyn Cabrera Cuenca Sandsmark, in their divorce case.

Police think Sandsmark was especially angered by recent court rulings ordering him to pay Weiss $1,500 to cover his ex-wife’s legal bills and granting her a portion of Sandsmark’s retirement funds.

In lieu of flowers, people are asked to make donations in Weiss’ name to the Disaster Relief Fund of the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
