Cypress Wins Softball Tournament

Cypress completed its run through the Southwestern softball tournament with a 7-1 victory over Grossmont in the championship game Thursday at Southwestern.

Shortstop Aimee Weathers’ two-run double in the first inning was the winning hit for Cypress (44-3), which won its sixth tournament championship of the season. Weathers went two for four with two runs batted in in the game. Jaime Wilkes pitched four innings and picked up her 51st career victory, and improved to 25-2 this season.

In the semifinals, third baseman Michelle Bailon went two for three with a home run and two RBIs to lead Cypress to a 5-0 victory over Cuesta. Shana Rizzo struck out two batters and picked up her seventh victory of the season.

In the Allan Hancock baseball tournament:

Cypress 6, L.A. Harbor 3--Greg Jacobs had a two-run double in the seventh and then scored on a single by Randy Case to give Cypress (23-6) a three-run lead.

In the Chargers’ second game, against Fresno, Jacobs had a two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score, 3-3. The score remained tied and was called after 12 innings because of time limit.

In the College of Sequoias baseball tournament:

Orange Coast 7, Gavilan 5--In his first start of the season, Chad Johnson pitched seven innings, striking out eight for Orange Coast (11-16). Johnson hit his eighth home run of the year in the third.

In Orange Coast’s second game, Craig Ritter was three for five with an RBI and Chris Ponchak had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs in the 9-7 loss to East Los Angeles.

In the Hardball Classic:

Rancho Santiago 7, El Camino 1--Matt Ward (7-0) pitched his fourth consecutive complete game and Rick Gonzalez and Kevin Duck hit back-to-back homers.

In the Dons’ second game, Kevin Burford hit a grand slam in the second inning and Eric Sobek drove in five runs with a double and home run as Rancho Santiago (27-2-1) beat L.A. Valley, 14-3.

Fullerton 6, L.A. Valley 4--Fullerton rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh and four in the eighth to erase a 4-0 deficit. Bo Bryant had two hits and three RBIs, and Tom Lee (2-0) pitched the eighth to earn the victory for Fullerton (17-3).

In another game, the Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take an 8-6 lead, but El Camino answered with a single run in the eighth in three more in the ninth to win 10-9.

Brian Logan hit his seventh home run of the year in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut Fullerton’s deficit to one. Dan Gusman also homered for the Hornets and had three RBIs.

Saddleback 11, College of the Sequoias 5--Kirk Bolling was four for five with two RBIs as Saddleback defeated fourth-ranked Sequoias (22-7). Greg Ferrell had two doubles for the Gauchos (24-4), ranked second in the state.

Ryan Ruiz had two hits and three runs scored in Saddleback’s earlier 8-5 victory over Bakersfield.
