El Toro’s Guy Shuts Out No. 9 Canyon

Suzanne Guy pitched a five-hit shutout as seventh-ranked El Toro defeated ninth-ranked Canyon, 1-0, in the second game of a nonleague softball doubleheader Friday at Canyon.

Guy also struck out five batters in three innings of relief during the first game, which finished tied, 1-1, after it was called in the eighth inning because of time limit.

Veronica Lopez of Canyon injured her knee sliding into third base and will be examined today. Lopez was an All-Southern Section selection each of the past two seasons. Canyon is 9-5-1.

In nonleague softball:

Capistrano Valley 0, Santa Margarita 0 (11, darkness)--Jackie Farmer had 10 strikeouts in a complete game for 10th-ranked Santa Margarita (7-2-1). Kristen Mullen gave up four hits for Capistrano Valley (5-2-1).

Newport Harbor 6, Costa Mesa 5 (9)--Newport Harbor picked up its fifth win of the season when Kristen Smith singled home Audra Adams in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run.

Mission Viejo 6, Saddleback 0--Jodee Favello was two for two with two RBIs and two runs scored for Mission Viejo (5-3). Nicole Marian (5-2) pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Diablos.

In Garden Grove League softball:

Bolsa Grande 2, Rancho Alamitos 1--Mary Petrie and Laina Kinsella scored on sacrifice flies by sisters Tiffany and Lakisha Houston in the second inning for Bolsa Grande (6-5, 2-0).

In Sea View League golf:

Corona del Mar 195, Woodbridge 219--Jeff Bemis and Craig Brooks each shot two-over-par 37 at Newport Beach Country Club to lead Corona del Mar (2-1, 2-0).

In South Coast League golf:

San Clemente 191, Mission Viejo 204--Sophomore Austin Berger recorded five birdies, shooting a five-under 31, to lead San Clemente (6-1, 2-0), at Pacific Golf Club.

In nonleague golf:

Sunny Hills 192, Huntington Beach 194--Dustin Schmidt shot one-under 35 as third-ranked Sunny Hills defeated Huntington Beach at SeaCliff. Tony Mendoza, Kevin Kohara and Kevin Jackson each shot 38 for the eight-ranked Oilers (4-1).

Valencia 413, El Modena 473--Dalen DeMary birdied both par fives on the back nine at Alta Vista and finished with a par 72 for Valencia (5-2-1).
