Driver Shot to Death After Dragging Officer With Car

A Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a man in Wilmington early Friday after the man reportedly slammed his car door on a police sergeant’s arm and dragged the sergeant several feet before crashing into a parked police car, authorities said.

The incident began about 12:20 a.m. when officers reportedly saw the driver, whose identity was not immediately released, run a red light at Figueroa Street and Imperial Highway, said Lt. Anthony Alba.

Police followed the car several miles until it stopped at the Port of Los Angeles. The two officers approached and “attempted to remove the suspect from his car,” police said.

But the driver slammed his door on Sgt. Dennis Sebenick’s arm and drove off, dragging the officer alongside the car, Alba said. When the car smashed into a patrol car, Officer Bruce Nelson, 36, fired his gun at the driver, fearing the sergeant would be killed, police said.

Sebenick, 52, was treated at a hospital and released. An investigation was continuing.
