Novelist Gordon McAlpine, author of “Joy in Mudville,” will speak at the Manuscripts literary lecture series at 7 p.m. Monday at the Newport Beach Public Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

McAlpine, a graduate of UC Irvine’s graduate Program in Writing, teaches creative writing in the Master of Fine Arts Program at Chapman University in Orange. His next novel, “The Persistence of Memory,” will be published in the fall.

Cost: $5 for members of the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation; $8 for nonmembers. Proceeds will go for material acquisitions.

Literary Salon, a new 10-week course offered by UC Irvine Extension in which students will read and discuss fiction, nonfiction and poetry in an informal setting, will begin April 7.
