Long Beach Shuts Door on CS Fullerton

Tammy Dietrich pitched her third one-hitter of the year as Long Beach State shut out Cal State Fullerton, 4-0, in the second game of a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Long Beach State.

Long Beach State (24-12-1) scored three runs in the third inning on two errors and two wild pitches. Melanie Muniz added an insurance run in the sixth inning, driving in Nicola Walsh with a single.

Jana Oetgen broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh for Cal State Fullerton (13-13).

In the first game of the doubleheader, Oetgen (7-6) pitched a two-hitter and Julie Williams drove in the only run with a double in the first inning as Cal State Fullerton defeated Long Beach State, 1-0.

Amy Miner (8-4) also threw a two-hitter in the loss for Long Beach State.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 5, Redlands 1--Dusty Martin was three for four with two runs scored for Chapman (14-9). Mark Mazon (2-1) pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits and Raul Guzman struck out two in 1 1/3 innings of relief to pick up his third save for the Panthers.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Martin was three for four with two RBIs and one run scored and Justin Miner (3-2) threw a three-hitter, striking out seven in seven innings for Chapman.

In the UCI/Marriott Classic men’s tennis tournament:

Wisconsin 4, UC Irvine 3--Steve Tallakson, Cameran Lindee and Nick Varvais won their singles matches for UC Irvine (7-7). Lindee and Rob Walker won in doubles for the Anteaters.

In nonconference volleyball:

Ball State 3, Long Beach State 2--Gaby Amar and Geoff Cryst each had 22 kills and Chris Seiffert had 75 assists for Long Beach State (16-8).
