City to Help Residents Beautify Their Homes

Residents and business managers looking for ways to make their city prettier now have their chance.

The city’s Beautification-Environmental Commission is launching a campaign to draw in volunteers and get them “Painting Buena Park Beautiful.”

Organizers hope the program, which initially is being funded through a $5,000 federal block grant, eventually will be fully funded and staffed by community volunteers.

Based on similar programs in Anaheim and other cities, the group will help homeowners who are unable to paint their homes because of physical or financial problems.

Volunteers will work on five single-story homes in the first year of the program, which begins with the fiscal year in July.

Teams of eight to 10 people will spend about 100 hours scraping, sanding and painting each home, according to a commission report.

The homes must be owned and occupied by a city resident who is physically disabled or on a low-income budget.

Councilwoman Patsy Marshall said she was thrilled to see the program take form after working with the commission on it for more than a year.

Her four fellow council members also voted to approve the program during a meeting Monday.

“It’s a good thing for Scout troops, church groups, high school football teams, anyone who wants to get involved in a project for the betterment of Buena Park,” Marshall said.

Several businesses have already agreed to donate money and materials, but organizers said much more is needed.
