Butler Out of Boxing Program in Reseda

Lionel Butler, World Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, has pulled out of Thursday night’s card at the Reseda Country Club and will fight Michael Grant in a non-title bout next Saturday in Las Vegas.

Butler, 26-12-1 with 21 knockouts, won the WBF title at the Country Club in November and has won his last three fights by first-round knockouts.

Light-heavyweight Asluddin Umarov will headline the Country Club program Thursday against an opponent to be determined.

North Hollywood welterweight Chuck Goossen has been added to the undercard.

New Mexico bound: LaCresha Clark, a sophomore guard for the College of the Canyons women’s basketball team, signed a letter of intent Friday with New Mexico State.

Clark, a Hart High graduate, was a first-team all-state selection after averaging 19.7 points, 6.7 assists and 4.5 steals this past season.

She led the Cougars to a 33-5 record and a runner-up finish in the state to Ventura.

She loves L.A.: Camarillo High outside hitter Kasey Jungwirth signed with the Cal State L.A. women’s volleyball team. The 6-foot Jungwirth was a two-time all-Marmonte League selection.

Rescheduled: All Northwest Valley and Valley Pac-8 baseball games originally scheduled for May 20 will be played Wednesday. The switch was made to allow for the start of the City Section playoffs May 20. The City final is scheduled for May 28 at Dodger Stadium.

Above average: The Hart High girls’ basketball and boys’ cross-country teams, and the Westlake football and Palmdale boys’ soccer teams had the highest cumulative team grade-point averages in their respective sports in the 1997 Southern Section Team Academic Awards Program.

Hart’s boys’ cross-country team had a GPA of 3.79. The Indian girls’ basketball team’s GPA was 3.67. The Palmdale boys’ soccer team’s GPA was 3.26 and the Westlake football team’s was 3.02.
