Sandberg Hit by Line Drive in Dugout

Second baseman Ryne Sandberg was cut on his right ear after being hit by a line drive while sitting in the dugout in the Cubs’ game Sunday with Atlanta in Chicago.

Sandberg, struck by the line drive off the bat off teammate Brant Brown in the fourth inning, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.

Jose Hernandez replaced Sandberg.

Second baseman Jeff Kent suffered a sprained neck after making a head-first slide into third base in fifth inning of the Giants’ second game of a doubleheader with the Mets in New York.

X-rays were negative and Kent says he expects to play today.

Center fielder Ellis Burks left the Rockies’ game against Montreal at Denver in the fourth inning after suffering a sprained right ankle in a collision with right-fielder Larry Walker.

Burks ran into Walker on a fly ball hit by Shane Andrews that Walker appeared to lose in the sun.

Burks will be re-evaluated today.

Montreal recalled pitcher Everett Stull from triple-A Ottawa to replace Rheal Cormier, who was placed on the disabled list with tendinitis in his left elbow.
