Animal Rights Activists Seek to Block Circus

Share

Charging that Circus Vargas mistreats animals and neglects their medical care, dozens of animal rights activists plan to ask the Redondo Beach City Council tonight to block the circus from coming to town in June.

The Redondo Beach-based Education and Action for Animals is leading the protest, claiming that the circus mistreated two elephants who died from tuberculosis last summer after Los Angeles-area performances. The group claims that Circus Vargas repeatedly refused to treat the animals--Joyce and Hattie--who performed with the circus until shortly before they died and exploited them with little concern for their comfort and well-being.

Circus Vargas is tentatively scheduled to set up at Aviation Park June 23-26.

Tonight’s meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Redondo Beach City Hall.
