Colorado first baseman Andres Galarraga, hit by a pitch Tuesday, has a broken left hand and was out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

He will be examined today in Denver by Dr. Frank Scott, a hand specialist.

Even after he was hit by the pitch from Kevin Foster in the first inning Tuesday, Galarraga remained in the game, going 0 for 4 with a walk.

Galarraga is batting .311 with three homers and 12 runs batted in in 12 games. He led the NL with 47 homers and 150 RBIs last season.

Greg Maddux and Chipper Jones, both nursing minor injuries, did not play in Atlanta’s 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Maddux has a strained right hamstring, an injury that has hampered him in the past. Manager Bobby Cox decided to have the four-time Cy Young Award winner skip his place in the rotation and give Terrell Wade his first start of the season.

“It would be just stupid to pitch him,” Cox said of Maddux. “We’re not going to win the pennant today.”

Maddux, who has missed only one start each of the past two seasons, is 1-1 with a 1.71 earned-run average in three starts this year.

Jones strained a groin muscle while running the bases in the third inning of the Braves’ 3-0 victory over the Reds on Tuesday night. He said he would definitely be ready for the Braves’ next game, Friday at Colorado.

“Believe me, I’m not going to miss a series at Coors Field,” he quipped.
