Carew Has Show-Stopping Performance

Share

Chapman’s Stephanie Carew continues to have a flair for the dramatic on the softball field.

Carew stepped up to the plate with Chapman trailing UC San Diego by one in the bottom of the seventh last Saturday. Heather Peters was on first with a walk and Carew eventually worked a full count before ending the game with a two-run home run well over the left-center field fence.

Carew’s NCAA Division III-leading 12th home run of the season gave Chapman a doubleheader sweep and extended the Panthers’ winning streak to 13 games. Carew is batting .545 with 53 runs batted in and a 1.118 slugging percentage.

Women’s basketball: Chapman Coach Mary Hegarty is interested in the head coaching position at UC Irvine, but doesn’t yet know if UCI is interested in her.

Hegarty, 55-43 in four seasons at Chapman, sent a resume to Irvine soon after Colleen Matsuhara was fired last month. She hasn’t had any other contact with Irvine officials.

“I decided to throw my hat in the ring and check it out,” said Hegarty, who was an assistant at UCLA for four years before coming to Chapman. “I am interested in finding out a little more about it.

“On the other hand, I have no eager desire to leave Chapman.”
